SH16 Royal Road safety improvements for southbound on-ramp
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 13 Jan 2026 10:37am | Auckland
Safety improvements will get underway later this week on the State Highway 16 (SH16) Royal Road southbound on-ramp.
Work will begin Sunday 18 January and run through to Thursday 7 March and will be carried out at night-time, Sundays to Thursdays between 9pm and 5am.
There will be no work on Sunday 25 and Monday 26 January (Auckland Anniversary Weekend) and Thursday 5 February (Waitangi Weekend).
The improvements are to help guide buses travelling along SH16 into the bus lane at the end of the Royal Road on-ramp. The new design will remove the existing bus lane on the on-ramp, push the electronic signals further up the on-ramp and change the layout at the bottom of the on-ramp to guide buses across to the designated bus lane.
Activities will include excavation, drainage improvements and paving.
Royal Road southbound on-ramp will now remain open for the majority of the project (originally advertised as being closed throughout the works). When it does need to be closed, motorists will need to detour to Lincoln Road southbound on-ramp via Makora Road and Triangle Road. This will add approximately 5 minutes to your journey.
Towards the end of the project a full southbound closure maybe required between Hobsonville Road and Lincoln Road. We will notify via email alerts closer to the time. Sign up here:
