SH2 Hakanui Straight (formerly Nesbitt's Dip) the focus of sealing work from Monday
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 20 Feb 2026 3:23pm | Gisborne
Crews working on the Hakanui Straight flood resilience project north of Gisborne are turning their attention to road surface construction.
While this work takes place, motorists can expect short delays from next week on State Highway 2 near Te Karaka.
From Monday (23 February), SH2 will be reduced to one lane between the hours of 7am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday, for approximately three weeks.
A pilot vehicle will guide traffic through the site during these times. A 30km/h speed restriction will be in place, and delays of up to 10 minutes are likely.
The Hakanui Straight project (formerly Nesbitt’s Dip) is south of Waioweka Gorge and we’ll be closely monitoring traffic flows as part of the Waioweka Gorge convoys, to ensure we minimise disruption at Hakanui Straight for those motorists travelling through.
Please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey. The work is weather dependent and dates may change if needed.
Following this work, road markings will be painted and safety barriers and signage installed.
About the project
This Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) project is raising an 850-metre flood-prone section of SH2 by around three metres to reduce the risk of closures during severe weather. It also includes new drainage, culverts, and safety barriers. Find out more here: Hakanui Straight Flood Resilience(external link)
