18 March 2026 update
Our series of maintenance “super weekends” on State Highway 2 (SH2) this month have gone smoothly so far, with the last one coming up this weekend. However - there is been a change to the dates this weekend, with work now starting Friday March 20th at 8pm and finishing Sunday 22 at 6pm Te Awanui Drive (Tauranga Harbour Bridge) – southbound.
This updates the traffic bulletin below.
5 March 2026
A series of maintenance “super weekends” is coming to State Highway 2 (SH2) this month, beginning on Takitimu Drive from tomorrow (Friday 6 March) to Monday 8 March.
This approach was successfully trialled last year, with crews able to work continuously 24/7 over several days. The uninterrupted schedule allowed significant progress to be made, so 3 more super weekends are planned for this month. The work will start at 6pm on a Friday night and continue through to 6am on the Monday morning.
The work involves removing the existing asphalt road surface and reconstructing it layer by layer with a new one, noise and vibration can be associated with this type of work. Line marking is then reinstated once the surface has been replaced.
6–8 March: SH2 Takitimu Drive – southbound
- What we’re doing: This work was originally planned for Friday 13 February but was postponed due to the weather. We’re resurfacing the southbound outer lane (towards Tauriko) between the Chapel Street on-ramp and the Elizabeth Street roundabout.
- How this impacts your journey:
- Night closures (6pm–6am): Both SH2 southbound lanes will be closed from the Chapel Street on‑ramp to the Elizabeth Street roundabout. The detour route is via Chapel Street, Cameron Road, Elizabeth Street and back onto SH2 at the roundabout and vice versa.
- Daytime traffic (6am–6pm): One southbound lane will remain open, with a reduced speed limit in place through the worksite while crews are still working. Due to the reduced lane width, delays are to be expected.
13–15 March: SH2 Tauranga Eastern Link (between Sandhurst Dr and Baypark interchange) – westbound
- What we’re doing: We’re resurfacing a section of the Tauranga Eastern Link in the westbound lanes (towards Mount Maunganui) between Sandhurst Drive and the SH2/SH29A Baypark interchange.
- How this impacts your journey: There will be an overnight detour in place for westbound traffic (towards Mount Maunganui) via Truman Lane back out to SH29A/SH2. The work will start at 6pm on Friday 13 March and continue through to 6am Monday 16 March. During the day, SH2 will have one lane open, with a reduced speed limit through the worksite while crews are still working. Delays are to be expected.
21–3 March: SH2 Te Awanui Drive (Tauranga Harbour Bridge) – southbound
- What we’re doing: We’re resurfacing the southbound lanes (towards Tauranga) between the Whareroa boat ramp and Tauranga Harbour Bridge on Te Awanui Drive.
- How this impacts your journey: While this work is underway there will be lane closures and switches with a reduced speed limit. The work will start at 6pm on Saturday 21 March and continue through to 6am Monday 23 March. Both lanes will be open Monday 23 with work being completed on Monday night.
