SH2 rebuild brings road closure between Ngatea and Mangatarata

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 5 Nov 2026 11:30am | Waikato

State Highway 2 (SH2) between Ngatea and Mangatarata will close for three weeks from 6am on Monday, 16 November 2026 while NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) rebuilds a section of the road.

Soft closure points will be in place at the SH2 intersections with State Highway 27 (SH27) and Pipiroa Road.

Residents will still be able to access their properties from the relevant side of the closure. However, the road will be fully closed through the work site between Mahuta Road North and Canal West Road, with no through access, excluding emergency service vehicles.

A detour for both directions will run via Pipiroa Road and State Highway 25 (SH25), reconnecting with SH2 and adding around 12 minutes to journeys.

The road is expected to reopen by Monday, 7 December 2026, with crews remaining on site during the following week to complete minor finishing work. All dates are subject to weather.

This essential maintenance will restore the road’s strength and condition. Closing the road allows crews to work extended hours where possible and complete the rebuild as quickly as possible ahead of the Christmas holiday period.

NZTA recognises the disruption this closure will cause, particularly during the busy summer construction season, and thanks road users, residents, and the local community for their patience.

Please plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow the temporary traffic management in place.
