NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 9 Jul 2026 10:12am | Bay of Plenty

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is advising motorists of two overnight closures and changes to road layout on State Highway (SH) 29 and SH2 during July.

Overnight road closures

  • SH2/Elizabeth Street to SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Road (west towards Bethlehem and south towards Tauriko) – Tuesday 28 July between 8pm to 4am (weather permitting).
  • SH2 detour via Cameron Road to Fifteenth Avenue. SH29 detour via Cameron Road to SH29A.
  • SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Road – full closure in both directions – Sunday 26 July, between 8pm to 4am. Northbound detour via SH29A. Southbound detour via SH2 towards Bethlehem, Moffat Road and Cambridge Road.

SH29/SH2 Takitimu Drive - road widening work

Work is nearly complete at the point where SH2 and SH29/Takitimu Drive merge, with barriers, lighting and sign gantries being installed and pavement works being completed. The exit from SH29 to Fifteenth Avenue will remain closed until this work is completed in late July, and the road reopened with 2 lanes for traffic. To enable the pavement construction works to be completed, from Tuesday 14 July 2 lanes will be reduced to one lane on SH2 from SH29 overbridge to Fifteenth Avenue. Final surfacing will be completed in spring.

SH2/Fifteenth Avenue - new bridge connection

At SH2/Fifteenth Avenue the bridge structure has been completed. Work is now focused on installing drainage and building the approaches at the top of Fifteenth Avenue, and panels are being installed along the large soil nail wall. The lane closure near Edgecumbe Road will stay in place to late 2026.

From the week starting Sunday 26 July, work will continue at the bottom of the Fifteenth Avenue bridge, where we’ll begin widening the road through this area, including pavement construction, barrier installation, and layout changes. This will be a longer phase of work, with an extended closure.

SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Road interchange

People travelling SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Road towards Tauranga CBD and Port will be driving on the new flyover bridge in late July. Moving traffic onto this new structure allows us to build the new SH29 road alignment and roundabout that will connect into the new expressway.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, reduce speed, and follow all temporary traffic management in place.
