SH2 Waioweka Gorge – change to convoy meeting point
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 22 Feb 2026 1:32pm | Bay of Plenty
We're moving the Ōpōtiki bound convoy start point to the Opato rest area from Monday 23 February, approximately 9km closer to Ōpōtiki than the current start point of Matawai (Te Wera Road intersection). This will reduce the convoy travel time by about 25 minutes.
The departure times remain the same.
This change not only means a better journey for road users but also gives our crews more time in-between convoys to get more of the mahi done across the gorge.
Convoys will depart:
Gisborne bound:
- Start point: Goldsmith Reserve
- Departing at: 7.00am, 11.00am, 5.00pm
Ōpōtiki bound:
- Start point: Opato rest area
- Departing at: 9.00am, 1.00pm, 7.00pm
Convoys are for essential travel only. Essential travel means only travelling if you absolutely need to, for things like work, medical appointments, caring responsibilities, or access to essential services. It’s not intended for general trips, sightseeing, or non‑urgent travel.
State Highway 2 through the Gorge is still fragile, so be prepared for the road to close at short notice if weather conditions or risk assessments change. Follow the direction of the crew on the ground at all times.
Please continue to check the NZTA Waikato and Bay of Plenty Facebook page for latest updates on the convoys.
