11:30am update

SH2 through the Waioweka Gorge has now reopened to traffic after loose material and debris closed the road earlier this morning.

Motorists can expect delays today as the team continue to clear debris.

10am update

Material came down overnight and overtopped the barriers, reaching the road. The barriers are now full, and more loose material is still coming down onto State Highway 2 through the Waioweka Gorge.

Crews are working to clear the debris so the barriers can catch any further slips. Until this is done, there is a real risk of falling rocks hitting vehicles, so the road must stay closed for safety.

We expect the road to reopen later this morning, likely between eleven and midday. An update will be provided as soon as it is safe to let traffic through.
