SH2 Waioweka Gorge – short periods of full closure required from tomorrow

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 1 Sept 2026 4:52pm | Bay of Plenty

Due to a slip on Sunday 30 August, State Highway 2 (SH2) through the Waioweka Gorge is currently down to one lane under stop/go traffic management, at a site 3km south of the Goldsmith Slip.

Crews will be at the slip site tomorrow, Wednesday 2 September and Thursday 3 September, to inspect the slip face, undertake rock scaling and make it safer for crews working on the road. This will require short periods of stop/stop traffic management, for up to 10 minutes at a time, from 7am to 5pm. Outside of this time, stop/go traffic management will remain in place.

Once the slip face has been made safe, work will get underway to clear the remaining debris from the road and reopen the road to 2 lanes. We expect to confirm when we can open both lanes in the coming days.

This work is weather dependant.

Keep an eye out on the NZTA Journey Planner and Facebook pages for updates on any lane reopenings overnight.
