Update 10:30am 16 April - Plan in place to re-open SH25 at Kereta Hill tomorrow afternoon
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is working to re-open State Highway 25 (SH25) at Kereta Hill on the Thames Coast Road, by tomorrow afternoon (Friday 17 April).
The Thames Coast Road has been closed since Sunday due to subsidence at Kereta Hill and further movement this week has delayed plans to complete temporary repairs and open a single lane.
An excavation is now needed, with rock and metal laid and compacted, ahead of asphalting for a single lane to open later tomorrow.
“In the meantime the state highway will remain closed until we can make it safe for vehicles. The site needs to settle and allow us to compact a metal base,” says Andy Oakley, NZTA Area Manager for Maintenance and Operations in the Waikato.
“We know this closure is having a real impact on local communities and freight facing a long detour.
“Safety must come first and we’re working as quickly as possible to get SH25 reopened as soon as we can.’’
The closure means all traffic north of Kereta Hill is using SH25 and SH25A to access Thames and vice versa.
Emergency vehicles can be escorted through the closure if required.
