SH25 now OPEN between Ruamahunga and Tapu

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 29 May 2025 4:21pm | Waikato

SH25 is now OPEN after a slip closed the Thames-Coast Road between Ruamahunga and Tapu this morning.

Loose rocks and debris on the slip face meant it wasn’t safer to open a lane any earlier today.

Geotechnical investigations and clean-up work are now complete.

Road users are advised to take care and drive to the conditions with more rain forecast this afternoon and into the evening.

Geotech crews assess the stability at the top of the slip.

This information updates the bulletin below.

8.10am, 29 May:

State Highway 25 (SH25) is closed between Ruamahunga and Tapu on the Coromandel Peninsula, due to two slips that fell overnight.

Large basketball sized rocks continued to fall onto the Thames Coast Road in the early hours this morning.

Road users are advised to delay their journey. The only detour available, is via Whitianga on the east coast of the peninsula.

Contractors for NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) are clearing the slips and more information will follow.
