NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 16 Jan 2026 11:35am | Bay of Plenty
16 January 2026:
An important heads-up ahead of 4 nights of work this Sunday on the SH29 ramp to SH2 Takitimu Drive. Stop/go traffic management will be in place on the ramp to allow crews to build a temporary lanes.
From Thursday 22 January, traffic will be diverted via this temporary lane for 4 months.
During this time, both SH29 and SH2 traffic will still be able to travel northbound onto SH2 Takitimu Drive, however traffic from SH29 to Fifteenth Ave will be detoured via SH2 Takitimu Drive to Elizabeth Street. SH2 traffic will still be able to travel to Fifteenth Ave.
The diversion is to allow construction of new lanes as part of the Takitimu North link project.
13 January:
From this Sunday 18 January, the off-ramp from SH29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road on to SH2/Fifteenth Ave will be closed through to late-April 2026 to progress construction for road widening in this area.
The crew’s main focus during this 4-month closure is to construct an extra lane and install signage gantry foundations.
Locals and those passing through the area should be prepared for disruption during the closure as there will be minor delays as we complete this work.
Northbound detour:
- SH2 to Elizabeth Street to Cameron Road, or
- SH2 to Elizabeth Street roundabout and back on SH2 to Eleventh Avenue.
The new connection from SH2/Fifteenth Ave to Takitimu Drive Toll Road/State Highway 29 will be built as part of the Takitimu North Link project – providing a better-connected journey for people travelling from Tauranga towards Te Puna, Tauriko and Lower Kaimai.
