State Highway 3 through Awakino Gorge is currently closed.

There has been some fresh land movement overnight.

The barrier in place, which has been designed to catch any material, has done its job and safely caught that material, however crews will need to clear that material out.

A geotechnical site assessment will then be carried out before the road can safely be reopened.

Crews will be working this morning to clear that material from behind the barrier, to restore access as quickly as possible.
