SH3 between Mokau and Piopio to close at 7am

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 6 Jul 2025 6:40am | Taranaki

A reminder State Highway 3 between Mokau and Piopio in north Taranaki will be closed from 7am today (Sunday 6 July).

The stretch of state highway opened overnight, down to one lane, and under stop/go traffic management and a reduced speed.

Today’s closure will allow crews to continue clearing slips and other debris, following heavy rainfall to hit the region.

Crews are working to get the road open again as quickly as possible.

Further south, on SH3 at Mount Messenger, the southbound lane remains closed following a slip under the road.  Stop/Go will be in place.

As at 6.40am:

  • SH3 between Mokau and Piopio will be CLOSED from 7am
  • SH3 at Mt Messenger – southbound lane CLOSED. Stop/go traffic management is in place
  • SH43 Forgotten World Highway CLOSED (between Whangamomona and Taumaranui – although non-essential travel along the entire route is not advised).

Please drive to the conditions throughout Taranaki and be alert to the potential for other slips or debris around the region.

The next planned update will be early afternoon.

Road users can also keep up to date with the NZTA Journey Planner.
