State Highway 35 at Wharekahika/Hicks Bay will remain open overnight today following a day of rock scaling.

The stretch of SH35 has been closed overnight for the past few nights following slips in the area.

Crews have been clearing the large slips and abseilers have today been clearing smaller, loose material from the hillside.

An onsite safety assessment has been carried out this afternoon and a decision made to keep the road open overnight.

Concrete barriers are scheduled to be installed in the area later this week to keep any further loose material away from the road, minimising the need for future closures on this stretch.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is reminding drivers to take care when travelling through, drive to the conditions and with caution.

Please expect the possibility of short-notice overnight closures if necessary.

Crews are not expecting any further rain in the area until Friday.
