SH39 is back open: Temporary bridge restores community connection south of Pirongia

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 20 Mar 2026 12:46pm | Waikato

State Highway 39 has reopened south of Pirongia, with people able to cross the Mangati Stream again via a temporary single-lane bridge reconnecting local communities, businesses and freight routes.

The crossing is controlled by traffic signals. A 30 km/h speed limit and a 50-tonne maximum weight limit apply. Motorists are asked to please follow the signs and take extra care through the site.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) thanks everyone who has adjusted travel plans and supported the work to get this important route reopened.

Drivers should allow a little extra time at peak periods while traffic settles into the new layout.
