SH39 Mangati Bridge to close for short periods on 30 November
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 4 Nov 2026 1:29pm | Waikato
The temporary Acrow bridge carrying State Highway 39 traffic across the Mangati Stream will have 2 one-hour closures on Monday 30 November.
The temporary bridge needs to close so that it can be used to lift 4 beams for the permanent replacement bridge into place.
The bridge will close from 10am to 11am on 30 November, reopen to allow traffic to flow from 11am to 12pm, then close again from 12pm to 1pm. Each closure will see 2 beams lifted into place.
Using the temporary bridge is the best way to get these beams in place safely and quickly, and doing this work during daylight hours is also less disruptive for the nearby residents.
The closure times are indicative only and may need to change on the day for operational reasons.
Motorists are advised to avoid SH39 south of Pirongia between 10am and 1pm on 30 November. The alternative route is via SH3 Te Awamutu.
The planned closure may be affected by weather, for example strong winds making it unsafe to proceed, in which case the lifts will be rescheduled.
The original Mangati Bridge was damaged beyond repair by flash flooding in February 2026.
The replacement bridge is being built higher and stronger to better withstand any future floods. It is expected to open to traffic in early 2027.
Symes Bridge, 4km further south of the Mangati Bridge on SH39 is currently closed until early December while its deck and beams are being replaced.
