State Highway 50 in Central Hawke’s Bay has reopened following a morning of cleanup after yesterday’s strong winds.
Crews have been clearing fallen trees and debris and removing an overturned truck from the road, after yesterday’s heavy winds caused damage, closing the road overnight between Maraekakaho and Ongaonga.
The road remains under stop/go traffic management in places while Unison continues repairs to power lines. Please expect delays and drive safely and to the conditions, with more strong winds forecast for the area.

SH50
A stretch of State Highway 50 between south of Hastings will remain closed overnight after strong winds today toppled trees and caused a truck to overturn.
Crews will reassess the road at first light ahead of recovering and removing the truck from site at 9am.
In the meantime SH50 is closed between Maraekakaho and Ongaonga in Central Hawke’s Bay.
The highway is closed between the intersections of Bridge Street in Ongaonga and Kereru Road in Maraekakaho.
A detour is in place. Please plan for delays.
SH2
Meanwhile, a stretch of State Highway 2 at the Takapau Plains will be reduced to one lane for a few hours tomorrow night.
The southbound lane will be closing between 7pm and 10pm tomorrow (Wednesday night) near the intersection with Snee Road.
During the single lane closure, crews will be removing a truck which crashed off the highway earlier today.
Crews will begin recovery of the truck from 8pm – please expect delays of up to 30 minutes as a result.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is advising people to plan their journeys to avoid the delays.
Please keep up to date with NZTA’s Journey Planner.
