11.33am
To keep people safe, the stretch of State Highway 6 (SH6) between Hira and Rai Valley is now closed.
Work is ongoing to assess the road which is also susceptible to wind and fallen trees. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) advises people delay their journey if possible, exercise caution if you must travel and drive to the conditions.
An alternative route is available via SH6/SH63 through the Wairua Valley.
People should continue to check weather and road condition updates and are also encouraged to report any state highway faults or damage to 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49).
It is critical people stay off closed roads. Disobeying closures puts yourself and others at risk.
Further updates will be provided as the situation changes.
