UPDATE: 1.45pm – SH73 reopens after serious crash

State Highway 73 near Darfield in central Canterbury has reopened after a serious vehicle crash involving a truck and a ute.

A temporary 50km/h speed restriction in place and road users are asked to drive with care.


9.30am – SH73 closed after serious crash

State Highway 73 near Darfield in central Canterbury is closed after a serious vehicle crash.

The highway is closed between Kirwee and Creyke Road. A detour is available via Tramway Road and Creyke Road.

Police were called to the crash, west of Ansons Road, involving a ute and truck, at around 8am. Initial indicators are there are serious injuries, police said.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time while emergency services work at the scene. Delays should be expected.
