Wellington’s state highway resurfacing programme comes to Kilbirnie later this month with State Highway 1 Cobham Drive and Wellington Road in line for planned works.

Work crews will be conducting night works on Sunday, 12 April between 10 pm and 4:30 am, and Wednesday, 15 April between 9 pm and 4:30 am.

This section of State Highway 1 carries over 30,000 vehicles daily. As it is a critical link to the airport and to the Miramar Peninsula, it is essential it is kept in good repair and properly maintained.

Contractors will resurface the northbound lanes of SH1/Wellington Road on Sunday, 12 April.

They will complete similar work on the northbound lanes of SH1/Cobham Drive, near the Evans Bay Parade intersection on the night of Wednesday, 15 April.

These sections of the highway have reached the end of their pavement life. Replacing them with a new road surface improves the highway’s grip and skid resistance, making the route safer for drivers.

The resurfacing has been timed to be done at night when traffic volumes are lower. This significantly reduces delays and disruption for traffic.

Directional road closures will be needed while the work is being completed. This allows the work to be completed faster and is safer for road crews and the public.

Local road detours will be available, but they will require extra travel time. Lower local road speed limits must be followed.

Road resurfacing equipment can be noisy, and residents can expect some disruption. However, work crews will endeavour to keep noise impacts to a minimum.
