Smoother, safer travel from SH1 resurfacing in Dunedin

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 28 Oct 2026 2:59pm | Otago

Essential resurfacing of part of State Highway 1/Cumberland Street in central Dunedin will mean a period of night closures next month.

SH1/Cumberland Street, between the intersections with State Highway 88/St Andrew Street and Frederick Street, is scheduled to close to traffic 7pm–6am daily from Sunday 8 November to Thursday 12 November, 2026 (finishing up at 6am on Friday 13 November). During these closures, traffic will be detoured via Great King Street or Anzac Avenue (see map below).

The work to renew the asphalt surface is required because this section of SH1/Cumberland Street is reaching the end of its useful life. When the new asphalt is laid, road users will have smoother and safer journeys, and the improved durability will reduce the need for ongoing repairs on this busy route.

Carrying out the resurfacing work at night, when traffic volumes are reduced, helps to limit the disruption and keep traffic and freight moving. While the road will be open during the day, a 30km/h temporary speed limit will be in place because of the rough and uneven surface in places.

Work will continue simultaneously on this section of SH1/Cumberland Street to construct a new pedestrian crossing near New World City Centre, that will provide safe direct access across the street to the Outpatient building of the New Dunedin Hospital. The asphalt resurfacing will work in with this ongoing construction of this pedestrian crossing.

On-street parking on SH1/Cumberland Street will be available during the day between 6am and 6pm, but there will be no on-street parking overnight while the resurfacing work is underway. Access to off-street parking will be maintained during the day (6am to 7pm), and road users can come and go as usual. Once work starts at 7pm, vehicle access to properties within the work site will not be possible.

Access to New World City Centre from SH1/Cumberland Street will be closed during this work but customers can still access the store via the Hanover Street entrance. All footpaths on SH1 Cumberland Street will remain open throughout the work.

Any changes to the scheduling of this work will be notified. Stay up to date at the Journey Planner site
