Southern Motorway Traffic Shifts

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 25 Sept 2026 1:23pm | Auckland

Road users travelling south on State Highway 1 (SH1) between Papakura and Drury will be switched onto a new southbound motorway alignment overnight on Monday 28 September.

Southbound traffic will be moved onto a new alignment between the BP motorway service centre (south of Papakura Interchange) and Drury Interchange, including a new bridge over Otūwairoa Stream.

The switch will be complete, with all road users travelling on the new southbound lanes, from 5am on Tuesday 29 September.

Road users are asked to follow the 80km/h temporary speed limit, avoid sudden lane changes and take extra care through the work area while people adjust to the new road layout.

Northbound traffic will not be affected.

The work is part of the SH1 Papakura to Drury project, which will improve safety, resilience and journey reliability on one of Auckland’s busiest transport corridors.

The traffic switch is subject to weather and, if delayed, will take place on a subsequent night next week.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) thanks motorists and residents for their patience during these important motorway improvements.
