Update: 17 October – Additional traffic management for bridge repair
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 17 Oct 2025 1:06pm | Otago
Stop/go traffic management will be added to the additional 30km/h temporary speed limit on the Waiareka Creek Bridge on State Highway 1 in North Otago next week, as repair is undertaken to address a minor issue on the bridge surface.
The stop/go and reduced speed limit is due to be in effect from Monday 20 October to Friday 24 October, from 7am to 6pm each day. The repair is to a hole about 400mm long and 100mm wide, which poses no immediate threat to road users or the structural integrity of the bridge, but could have worsened over time.
Road users are asked to drive with care while the work is carried out. We thank people for their patience.
16 October – Speed limit reduced ahead of minor bridge repairs
A temporary speed reduction is in place on the Waiareka Creek Bridge on State Highway 1 in North Otago, as a repair is planned for a minor issue with the bridge surface.
The temporary speed limit of 30km/h (compared to the usual 100km/h limit) is to address a small hole on the bridge surface where grout has fallen out between two precast concrete panels. Measuring about 400mm long and 100mm wide, the hole is causing a bump and noise for vehicles crossing the bridge but poses no immediate threat to road users or the structural integrity of the bridge.
The speed reduction is to avoid worsening the hole and creating any risk to the bridge and road users.
Contractors on behalf of New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi will be repairing the hole as soon as possible, and we will advise of any additional traffic management required for this work.
We thank people for their patience and understanding as we address this issue.
