Stabilisation work ahead on SH2 at Tangoio Falls Scenic Reserve

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 16 Mar 2026 1:24pm | Hawke’s Bay

Work begins on 7 April to stabilise a retaining wall above Tangoio Falls Scenic Reserve, north of Napier.

The work is expected to take 9 weeks to complete – and is scheduled to finish late May. During the work, crews will be onsite between 6am and 6pm Monday to Friday.

A stretch of State Highway 2 past the reserve will be reduced to one lane, under stop/go traffic management while the work is underway.

Outside of these work hours, stop/go traffic lights will remain in place 24/7, operating on a countdown timer.

At all times, a reduced speed will be in place and drivers are asked to plan their journeys to take the delays into consideration.

About the project

The slope underneath the road has been compromised from scour and the loss of vegetation which had been covering and helping to stabilise the area. It’s also a steep and narrow site to access.

Specialist crews will be stabilising this slope under the retaining wall with 51 ground anchors between 10 and 12 metres long. Shotcrete (liquid concrete) will then be used to cover the anchors.

This project is similar to stabilisation work completed just south of this site last year by the Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) alliance.

Thank you

We’re aware this section of road has had its fair share of roadworks and cyclone recovery work in recent years. We’re grateful for the continued support of the very patient locals and road users who travel this road regularly.
