Drivers travelling between Blenheim and Kaikoura are warned to expect delays this morning as emergency services attend a serious crash on State Highway 1 near Lake Grassmere.

The incident was reported shortly before 8 am. Emergency services are at the scene.

The highway is currently closed between Seddon and Taimate Roads. No immediate local road detours are available.

Drivers are asked to delay their travel and avoid the area until the incident is resolved.

At this stage, the highway is expected to remain closed for several hours while Police conduct a crash investigation.

Drivers travelling between Christchurch and Blenheim should consider using the inland route instead – SH7 to Springs Junction, SH65 to O’Sullivans, SH6 to Kawatiri Junction, and SH63 Wairau Valley.

This is a longer journey and requires extra travel time. Drivers, especially those with Picton Ferry connections, must plan their journeys accordingly.

Updates on the highway’s status can be found online. Road users should check road conditions before they travel.
