NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 28 Oct 2025 3:10pm | Nelson and Marlborough

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA is advising drivers of night-time resurfacing work planned for two sections of State Highway 1 in Marlborough next month as part of state highway summer maintenance works.

SH1 Riverlands

The State Highway 1, Alabama Road intersection in Riverlands will be completed first on Monday, 10, Tuesday, 11, and Wednesday, 12 November between 6 pm and 7 am.

Stop/go traffic management will be in place as contractors remove the road surface and lay new asphalt. Road users on State Highway 1 can expect delays of up to 10 minutes during work hours.

As part of this work, contractors will also resurface a section of Alabama Road, at the State Highway 1 intersection. All traffic needing to access Alabama Road during work hours must detour via Redwood Street.

SH1 Spring Creek

Contractors will then move to complete work on the State Highway 1, Spring Creek roundabout.

On Thursday 13 and Friday 14 November between 7pm and 7am, stop/go traffic management will be in place as contractors remove the road surface at the roundabout and replace it with asphalt.

Drivers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes during work hours. A 30km/h temporary speed limit will be in place during and outside of work hours.

During the night works contractors will resurface the start of Ferry Road near the railway lines. This means access to and from Ferry Road via State Highway 1 will be closed during work hours. Residents must detour via Tua Marina from Blind Creek Road to Thomas Road, Neal Road onto Chaytors Road, Bothams Bend Road and then Ferry Road.

Advice for drivers

Drivers are asked to respect all traffic management and temporary speed limits in place while these works are being completed. It is also essential they follow all instructions from road workers. They are doing their best to complete these works and keep traffic moving.

Traffic management and reduced speed limits are essential for keeping drivers and road crews safe. They also help protect unfinished road surfaces from traffic damage and help prevent damage to vehicles.

Drivers should check road conditions before they travel as knowing when and where roadworks are happening means they can time their travel to avoid them or allow extra time for their journeys.
