State Highway 1 Manakau overbridge resurfacing night works
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 9 Oct 2025 8:43am | Wellington
Manakau residents can expect to see more improvements on the Manakau Rail Overbridge in September.
Resurfacing work is planned for the bridge for two nights - Sunday, 19 October and Monday, 20 October - to improve its safety and reliability. These works are weather permitting and could be rescheduled at short notice.
Road crews will be completing this work between 9 pm and 4.30 am under stop/stop traffic management.
Since State Highway 1 is heavily used and there are no local road detours available, this work will cause travel delays. Drivers can expect delays of up to 20 minutes when passing through the work site. Due to the narrowness of the bridge, works cannot be done safely under stop/go traffic management.
The resurfacing has been deliberately planned as night works as there will be fewer vehicles on the road. It means overall disruption for drivers is significantly reduced.
It is essential that road users factor these road works into their travel plans and allow extra time for their journeys.
NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance understand that these works will affect residents and road users. However, this essential state highway maintenance is critical in ensuring roads remain safe and reliable. We thank the public for their patience and understanding during these projects.
