State Highway 1 Mount Victoria Tunnel to be closed Wednesday night
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 16 Dec 2025 2:50pm | Wellington
Wellington drivers travelling between the city centre and Miramar will have to use local road detours tomorrow night (Wednesday, 17 December) with the Mount Victoria Tunnel to be closed for urgent works.
The State Highway 1 tunnel will be closed between 10 pm and 4:30 am to allow two traffic cameras to be repaired.
A fault with the cameras was identified during a scheduled maintenance closure earlier this month. It could not be fixed at the time, which is why tomorrow night’s closure is needed.
The cameras are critical for monitoring traffic in the tunnel and are essential safety tool for responding to incidents (e.g., crashes) when they occur. They are not used for speed enforcement.
While the tunnel is closed, drivers will have to use alternative routes on local roads. This will require additional travel time, so drivers should allow extra time for their journeys.
NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance thank drivers for their patience and cooperation while this important safety work is completed.
