State Highway 1 Newlands onramp closure coming next week
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 11 Jun 2026 3:11pm | Wellington
Newlands residents will need to be ready for roadworks next Thursday night (18 June), with the State Highway 1 Newlands southbound onramp to be closed for street light replacements.
The onramp will be closed from 10:30 pm to 4:30 am.
Drivers who want to access State Highway 1 and head south from the suburb will have to detour by heading north on State Highway 1 and turning at the Glenside/Grenada interchange.
This is a longer journey and will require extra travel time.
Contractors will be replacing streetlights. These are critical for ensuring drivers have good visibility at night when using the onramp to access State Highway 1. Regular maintenance like this is critical for helping keep drivers safe.
Because the work requires using lifts from large vehicles, space is limited and the ramp must be closed to traffic to ensure the public and work crews are kept safe.
NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance deliberately time this maintenance to be done at night when traffic volumes are lower. This significantly reduces the overall impact on road users, minimising disruption, and delays.
This work is weather-dependent, and schedules may change at short notice.
