Traffic heading north out of Wellington is advised to use State Highway 59 as an alternative route due to a vehicle fire on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully.
The motorway is closed to northbound traffic at the Wainui Saddle. A northbound closure is being between the State Highway 58 interchange and Mackays Crossing.
The vehicle fire was reported around 8:30 am. It is affecting the motorway’s northbound lanes. The route remains open to southbound traffic.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area and follow instructions from emergency services and road crews until the incident is resolved. Emergency services are attending.
Delays can be expected for northbound traffic, and drivers should allow extra time for their journeys.
Updates on the highway’s status are available online. Drivers should check road conditions before they travel.
