UPDATE: State Highway 1 Transmission Gully roadworks

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 13 Feb 2026 2:51pm | Wellington

Due to bad weather the planned reopening of the southbound offramp at Waitangirua has been delayed.

It is now expected to reopen to traffic tomorrow night (Saturday, 14 February), not tonight as was earlier indicated.

12 February

Transmission Gully closures:

New schedules are now available for ongoing resurfacing works on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully.

Drivers are strongly encouraged to keep up to date with works on the motorway and to check road conditions before travelling.

Works update:

Good progress is being made on resurfacing work with the final sections at the northern end of the motorway to be swept and line marked later this week. This will require northbound and southbound night closures between Paekākāriki and the SH58 interchange (see schedule below).

Pavement reconstruction at Waitangirua continues. Weather permitting, work on the southbound lanes is expected to be finished early next week.

Pavement reconstruction for the northbound lanes will begin next week, and continue until late February, weather permitting.

Drivers should expect lane closures and lower speed limits in both northbound and southbound lanes at Waitangirua next week.

Travel delays can be expected, particularly during peak commuting times. Drivers should consider using SH59 as an alternative route.

The southbound offramp at Waitangirua will remain closed 24/7 until Friday night.

Northbound works at Waitangirua will begin next week and will see the Waitangirua northbound on‑ramp closed for around five days. An update on the timing for this will be provided once schedules are confirmed.

These works are weather-dependent, and schedules may change if bad weather occurs.

Speed Limit Change:

The Minister of Transport has confirmed the speed limit on SH1 Transmission Gully will increase to 110 km/h from 12:01 am on Monday, 16 February.

New signs showing the new speed limit will be installed on Sunday night. Drivers can expect some traffic management and temporary speed limits on the motorway at various locations while this is completed.

It is critical that all drivers obey the current 100 km/h speed limit until the new speed limit takes effect.

Drivers must also follow all temporary speed limits in place at roadwork sites. This is essential for keeping the public and contractors safe.

Road works will still be ongoing after the new speed limit takes effect.
