State Highway 1 Transmission Gully roadworks update
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 13 Mar 2026 9:40am | Wellington
Next week’s details are now available for the SH1 Transmission Gully summer maintenance works.
Pavement reconstruction at Waitangirua is complete, and contractors will now finish a small section of chip sealing near Waitangirua.
This will be done next week and will not require any road closures. However, ramp closures will be required.
SH1 Transmission Gully works next week:
Northbound lanes
- Chip seal works will begin in the northbound lanes on Tuesday, 17 March. The northbound onramp and offramp at Waitangirua will be closed on Tuesday only, between 6 am and 5 pm, weather permitting.
Southbound lanes
- Chip seal works will begin in the southbound lanes on Wednesday, 18 March. This means the southbound onramp and offramp at Waitangirua will need to close for the day, between 6 am and 5 pm, weather permitting.
Chip seal works will also be happening on the highway shoulder near Battle Hill. There will be a lane closure here.
Separate works are also happening for Mackays Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre which affect both SH1 and SH59.
Driver advice:
Drivers can expect lane closures and temporary speed limits in both north and southbound lanes at Waitangirua until the end of next week. This is when the last section of summer maintenance works on Transmission Gully are expected to be completed.
Road users are encouraged to use State Highway 59 as an alternative route to avoid roadworks.
As there will be loose chip on the highway, it is crucial all vehicles follow the temporary speed limit to avoid damage to the road and vehicles.
