State Highway 1 Transmission Gully roadworks update
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 20 Mar 2026 1:05pm | Wellington
New details have been confirmed for ongoing maintenance work on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully.
Waitangirua:
A northbound lane closure at Waitangirua is in place for resurfacing works and is due to be removed by 7 pm tonight. For southbound traffic, a lane closure will remain until 5 pm on Saturday.
Once the lane closures are removed the motorway will have all lanes open at Waitangirua.
A 30 km/h temporary speed limit will remain in place until Sunday evening for both the north and southbound lanes at these locations while the new chipseal beds in.
Battle Hill:
Chipsealing work is underway here today in the southbound lanes and will continue until 7 pm tonight. This work is underway on the motorway’s shoulder and will affect southbound traffic.
A 30 km/h temporary speed limit will be in place.
Driver Advice:
Drivers must follow lower speed limits in areas where work is underway and where new chipseal has been laid. This helps prevent damage to the new road surface and reduces the risk of stone chip damage to vehicles.
Travel delays can be expected, and drivers should allow extra time for their journeys or use State Highway 59 as an alternative route.
