State Highway 1 Transmission Gully roadworks update
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 19 Feb 2026 2:45pm | Wellington
Work continues to progress well for pavement works on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully.
Drivers can expect to see just one area of the motorway with roadworks underway next week – at Waitangirua.
This is the section that, this week, has had lane closures and temporary lower speed limits in place in southbound lanes.
Contractors will start work here on the motorway’s northbound lanes from Sunday night, and this will affect the Waitangirua northbound onramp.
It will be closed 24/7 from 5am Monday morning (23 February). It is scheduled to reopen by 8pm on Friday (27 February).
Drivers needing to access the motorway at Waitangirua will need to use an alternative route.
This work is weather-dependent, and schedules may change at short notice. Drivers should check road conditions before they travel.
Drivers are asked to respect all temporary speed limits and traffic management in place.
They are there to keep people safe and also to protect the new road surface. The lower speed limit also helps prevent stone chip damage to other vehicles.
Works schedule:
- 5am Monday, 23 February to 8pm Friday, 27 February. 24/7
- SH1 Waitangirua northbound onramp CLOSED
