State Highway 2 Melling Transport Improvements update
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 2 Apr 2026 2:04pm | Wellington
Project works continue for the Melling Transport Improvements project, with directional night closures planned for State Highway 2 next week.
The highway will be closed to southbound traffic between Kennedy Good Bridge and Melling Link on Tuesday to Thursday nights (7–9 April), between 9 pm and 4 am.
The route will remain open for northbound drivers.
Southbound traffic heading towards Wellington will need to exit at Kennedy Good Bridge and use local road detours through Lower Hutt.
Access to State Highway 2, for both north and southbound traffic, will remain available at Melling Link.
Cyclists must also detour onto the temporary Hutt River Trail on the eastern (city) side of the river, crossing at Ewen Bridge and reconnecting with the cycleway at Bridge/ Parliament St southbound (Petone to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua).
This closure will require extra travel time. Drivers must observe all local road speed limits and allow extra time for their journeys.
The closure is necessary to allow installation of new steel safety barriers north of Melling Link on the southbound lane. These barriers are part of the alterations needed as the footprint of the project site begins to affect the state highway corridor.
Works schedule and detour map:
- Tuesday, 7 April to Thursday, 9 April, 9 pm – 4 am.
- SH2 CLOSED between Kennedy Good Bridge and Melling Link.
- Local road detours available via Lower Hutt.
- SH2 will remain OPEN to northbound traffic.
