State Highway 2 Petone southbound closure planned this Sunday night

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 6 Aug 2026 12:22pm | Wellington

Drivers travelling south on State Highway 2 should plan ahead for a southbound closure between Dowse Interchange and Petone this Sunday night.

Contractors will be completing important road repairs, which will see the road surface patched on the highway’s southbound lanes.

This will be done in the 80 km/h section before the relatively tight bend where State Highway 2 passes under the Petone overbridge. Ensuring the road surface here is properly maintained is critical for keeping drivers safe.

Because the repairs require heavy equipment, and because space at the site is limited, a directional closure is essential to ensure contractors can complete their work safely and effectively.

The work will be carried out between 9 pm and 4:30 am on Sunday night (9 August). Traffic management will be set up from 7 pm.

The closure is needed so crews can safely complete repairs on this busy section of the highway. Scheduling the work overnight, when traffic volumes are lower, helps minimise disruption for road users.
While the closure is in place, southbound traffic will be detoured via Hutt Road, Petone (see map below). The highway’s northbound lanes will remain open.

Drivers should allow extra time for their journeys, follow all temporary traffic management, and take care around road crews and equipment.

The work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if wet weather or other unforeseen circumstances occur. Road users should check conditions before travelling.
