State Highway 6 Korere rebuild about to kick off

Another section of State Highway 6 in the Tasman region will soon be fully rebuilt, as this season’s summer maintenance programme continues.
Four weeks of road works are due to begin on Monday 19 January, at Korere, about 11 kilometres south of Kohatu Junction, on a 600-metre stretch covering both lanes of the highway.
Weather permitting, the rebuild is due to be completed by Friday 20 February.
The existing road surface will be excavated to a solid foundation, and the highway will be rebuilt before new chipseal is applied. This will result in a much stronger road, and one that will need less maintenance in the future.
The work will be underway Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm. Stop/Go traffic management and a 30 km/h temporary speed limit will be in place during work hours.
Outside work hours, a temporary speed restriction will remain in place due to the uneven road surface.
Drivers should allow extra time for travel and expect delays of up to 15 minutes.
While the rebuild is underway, drivers are urged to follow all traffic management and temporary speed limits. Excessive speed can damage vehicles and also the new road surface. Speed limits are there to keep everyone safe.
No work will take place between the Nelson Anniversary and Waitangi Day weekends to avoid disrupting holiday traffic.

Examples include rockfall resilience work at Granity Narrows between Kawatiri and Owen Junction, and at O'Sullivan's Junction near the intersection of State Highways 6 and 65. Following a pause over the New Year holiday period, work is due to resume at these sites from Tuesday, 13 January.
