Stop/Go for Essential Work on SH1 Northland
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 22 Aug 2025 3:32pm | Northland
Northland drivers — expect some delays on State Highway 1 over the coming weeks as essential maintenance gets underway.
From Sunday 24 August to Friday 10 October (weather permitting), our crews will be working overnight between 8pm and 6am on two busy stretches of SH1:
- Te Hana to just north of Kaiwaka
- Brynderwyn Hills to Oakleigh
This work involves pre-seal repairs to prepare the road for a major resurfacing programme. To keep everyone safe, stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place.
We’re doing the mahi at night to minimise disruption, but daytime speed restrictions will remain while the new surface settles.
An important reminder - even if the road looks clear, please stick to the posted speed — it helps the new surface last longer and protects your windscreen from flying loose chips.
These repairs are essential to smooth out defects and ensure the new surface bonds properly. Once the warmer weather arrives, crews will return to complete the final resurfacing.
We know delays can be frustrating, so we encourage you to plan ahead and allow extra travel time especially in peak periods.

This work is part of Northland’s summer maintenance programme, which will see NZTA renew approximately 194 lane kilometres of state highway across the region by the end of May 2026.
NZTA thanks road users for their patience.
