A ‘super weekend’ of construction work is planned from next Friday 5 to Monday 8 June on State Highway 29 (SH29) Takitimu Drive Toll Road and State Highway 2 (SH2) Takitimu Drive to enable major construction works to progress.

As construction intensifies on the Takitimu North Link project, temporary closures are required to safely complete critical activities at the point where SH2 and SH29/Takitimu Drive merge. These works include road widening, pavement construction, barrier installation, and layout changes. Full and partial closures are necessary to ensure the safety of both construction crews and motorists.

Drivers should expect delays, particularly around SH29 at Tauriko and SH2 near Fifteenth Avenue. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, reduce speed, and follow all temporary traffic management in place.

Closure details

1. Nighttime closure - SH2 Takitimu Drive north / city bound, from between SH29 to Eleventh Avenue.

  • Friday 5 June: 8pm – 6am
  • Saturday 6 June: 7pm – 6am
  • Sunday 7 June: 7pm – 4am
  • Detour: All vehicles via Cameron Road and Elizabeth Street

2. Weekend closure – SH29 Toll Road north / city bound, from between SH29/SH36 at Tauriko to SH2 at Fifteenth & Eleventh Avenues

  • 8pm Friday 5 June – 4am Monday 8 June
  • Detour: All vehicles via SH29A

South and west bound routes remain open throughout the works, including SH2 access to Fifteenth Avenue.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternative routes where possible.

Rain dates have been scheduled for 12–15 June; however, as these works are weather‑dependent, they may also be rescheduled if conditions change.

Takitimu North Link Stage 1 is a Crown‑funded 6.8km 4‑lane expressway between Tauranga and Te Puna. As a Road of National Significance, it will provide a safer, more reliable alternative to SH2, support economic growth, and improve travel reliability for people and freight across the region.
