Surface flooding closes stretch of SH35 overnight
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 18 Apr 2025 7:32pm | Gisborne
Roading crews have closed a stretch of State Highway 35 between Hicks Bay and Potaka due to surface flooding and silt.
Much of Tairāwhiti has seen heavy and persistent rainfall over the past 24 hours and more is forecast overnight.
This stretch of SH35 has been closed this evening and will remain closed overnight.
Crews will reassess the highway tomorrow morning (Saturday) before any decision on reopening is made.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi acknowledges the closure will be frustrating however the safer option is to close given the level of surface flooding and overnight forecast.
Even though other parts of SH35 and SH2 around the region are currently open, NZTA is advising road users to avoid overnight travel if possible.
It’s important people driving on the roads are alert to the possibility of surface flooding, slips and debris, drive to the conditions and with caution.
Crews are monitoring the network; please also expect the possibility of other short-notice closures, and keep up to date overnight with NZTA’s Journey Planner.
