Top of the South Island state highway update – 12:30pm update
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 3 Jul 2025 12:39pm | Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough, West Coast, Canterbury, Otago, Southland
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is monitoring state highways across the top of the South Island as rain continues to fall.
All state highways in the region remain open at this stage, although that could change if road conditions become unsafe.
People are urged to avoid travel if possible. If travel is necessary, NZTA asks people to take extreme care, beware of surface flooding and drive to the conditions.
Sections of state highway subject to traffic management and temporary lower speed limits:
- State Highway 6 between Kohatu and Kawatiri Junction has damage to the road from prior flooding but is open with various traffic management sites and temporary lower speed limits in place.
- State Highway 6 at Coal Creek, south of Owen River is open to single lane stop/go under a temporary lower speed limit.
- State Highway 63 between Renwick and St Arnaud is open to RESIDENTS and ESSENTIAL VEHICLES ONLY with temporary lower speed limits in place.
People are urged to stay up to date on road and weather conditions. Road conditions can change without warning, and routes can be closed at short notice due to slips and flooding.
