Traffic impacts for important West Coast roadworks
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 6 Jan 2026 3:03pm | West Coast
Road users may face delays to their travel as important work is due to be carried out at two State Highway 6 sites on the West Coast from later this month.
Rock scaling is due to take place at Meybille Bay, between Greymouth and Westport, from 19 January to 23 January to reduce the risk of rockfall onto SH6. This may mean delays of up to 30 minutes each day, as traffic is held up at times during the hours of 7am to 6pm.
From 28 January through to 10 February (excluding the weekend of 31 January & 1 February), delays of up to 10 minutes should be expected for those travelling through Franz Josef township, as road resurfacing work is due to be carried out.
People are encouraged to plan for these delays and allow extra time for their travel. In the case of both pieces of work, factors such as poor weather could mean rescheduling at short notice. If this happens, notification will be provided.
We thank people in advance for their patience as this work is carried out.
