Drivers are encouraged to plan their journeys carefully next week, with State Highway 1 offramps on the Wellington urban motorway to have night closures for essential maintenance 

The Aotea Quay and Hawkestone Street southbound offramps will both be closed on Sunday night from 9 pm to 4:30 am. A second night closure is also scheduled for the Hawkestone Street southbound offramp on Monday night between 9 pm and 4:30 am. 

Contractors will be resurfacing the Aotea Quay offramp. This will improve the road’s surface and make it safer for traffic by providing better grip and skid resistance.

For the Hawkestone Street offramp, work crews will remove hazardous trees adjacent to the road,  reducing the risk of tree falls and debris affecting the ramp during bad weather.

While this work is underway and closures are in place, southbound traffic will need to use alternative routes to access Thorndon, the Wellington CBD, and Tinakori Road via the Murphy Street and Terrace offramps.
