UPDATE: 30 May 2026, 8.30am – SH1 near Dunedin reopened early this morning

State Highway1/Main South Road between Allanton and East Taieri reopened about 1.30am this morning following a fatal crash yesterday afternoon.

The road reopened after police completed their onsite investigation at the intersection with Law Road, and the site was fully cleared.


29 May 2026, 6.45pm – Detours after SH1 crash closure

Detours are now in place after a serious crash closed State Highway 1/Main South Road near Dunedin.

Emergency services are working at the site on SH1/Main South Road at the Law Road intersection, between Allanton and East Taieri.

Southbound traffic should turn right from SH1 onto Riccarton Road, left on to State Highway 87/Outram-Mosgiel Road, left on to Hoylake Street, then continue along Bell Street, then continue along Allanton Road, left on to State Highway 86/Centre Road, then right back onto SH1. The reverse applies for northbound traffic.


29 May 2026, 6.30pm – SH1 near Dunedin closed after crash

Detours are being arranged after a serious crash has closed State Highway 1/Main South Road near Dunedin.

SH1/Main South Road is closed at the Law Road intersection, between Allanton and East Taieri.

In the meantime, people should follow directions provided at the site or avoid the area if they can. 


29 May 2026, 6.15pm – SH1 near Dunedin blocked after crash

Road users are being warned to expect delays after a crash on State Highway 1/Main South Road near Dunedin that has left the road blocked.

Emergency services are at the scene of the crash on SH1/Main South Road at the Law Road intersection, between Allanton and East Taieri.  

More information on the status of the road will be provided when available.
