UPDATE: Bad weather affecting Wellington highways – SH58 now OPEN

UPDATE 10:05 am:

State Highway 58 is now open between Pāuatahanui and the State Highway 2 Haywards interchange.

The route is still affected by minor flooding near Judgeford. Drivers are asked to drive with caution when travelling the route and to follow all traffic management and temporary speed limits in place.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance thank the public for their patience and cooperation while contractors worked to reopen the highway.


UPDATE Sunday 6:50 am:

Following an early morning inspection, State Highway 58 remains closed to traffic this morning with localised flooding still affecting the highway near Flightys Road.

However, the route is expected to reopen before 10 am this morning. 

Access in the closure area remains restricted to road crews, emergency services, and affected residents. All other traffic is asked to avoid the area until the highway is reopened.

The highway’s status can be checked online, and drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before they travel.

UPDATE Saturday 18 April - 4pm:

State Highway 58 is expected to remain closed overnight between Pāuatahanui and State Highway 2 interchange as work continues to repair damage caused by heavy rain and flash flooding this morning.

The route has been particularly affected near Judgeford and towards Pāuatahanui. Road crews  are working hard to restore the route.

However, further bad weather and heavy rain is expected this evening. To ensure public safety, the call has been made to keep this section of State Highway 58 closed to traffic overnight. 

Access in the closure area will be for road crews, emergency services, and affected residents only. All other traffic must avoid the area. 

Residents travelling to and from their properties must exercise extreme care, especially after dark.

Travel advice

Weather warnings remain in place for the lower North Island until early Sunday morning, with another band of heavy rain expected around 8 pm tonight.

Road conditions are hazardous and drivers must use extreme caution if they are using highways or local roads. 

While all other state highways in the region are currently open, the possibility remains that worsening weather could create further closures and disruption. 

Drivers should consider their travel plans carefully and check road and weather conditions if they need to make journeys.


UPDATE 1:15 pm:

Additional areas of state highway have reopened in Wellington following heavy rain and flooding this morning.

The SH58 Pāuatahanui / Paekākāriki Hill Road roundabout is now open to traffic, as is the Plimmerton roundabout on State Highway 59.

Flooding has also receded at the State Highway 2 Haywards interchange, while a lane closure is in place, it has reopened to northbound traffic.

However, State Highway 58 remains closed between Pāuatahanui and the State Highway 2 interchange. Drivers are asked to continue to avoid this route at this time.

With further bad weather expected today and tonight, drivers are strongly encouraged check road and weather conditions before they travel. Bad weather can see roads closed at short notice.


UPDATE midday:

Bad weather and localised flooding continue to affect state highways in the wider Wellington region this morning.

However, some previously closed sections have reopened. 

State Highway 59 has reopened at Mana Esplanade. But the nearby Plimmerton roundabout remains closed to traffic.

In the Hutt Valley, State Highway 2 has reopened to northbound traffic between Kennedy Good Bridge and the Haywards interchange. But the highway remains closed to northbound traffic between Haywards interchange on and offramps - due to flooding.

Driver advice

Drivers must avoid affected areas until flooding recedes and the roads are able to be reopened. They should also follow all directions and instructions from emergency services and contractors.

With two further periods of heavy rain forecast for this afternoon and evening, drivers should be prepared for further disruption and more road closures.

Road crews are attending multiple incidents across the highway network and will continue to do so. Drivers can expect traffic management and delays where work crews are resolving incidents and clearing debris. Please follow all traffic management and temporary speed limits in place. They are there to keep everyone safe

Heavy rain and flash flooding is continuing to affect and close state highways around the Wellington region.

Extreme care is need on the roads with flooding reported at multiple locations across the state highway network. 

Drivers are urged to follow all instructions from emergency services and contractors, and to observe and follow all traffic management in place. Non-essential travel should be delayed until weather conditions improve.

UPDATE 9:35 am:

Ongoing bad weather and heavy rain has closed another Wellington highway this morning.

Current closures

  • State Highway 58, Pāuatahanui to State Highway 2 Haywards – flooding
  • State Highway 59, Mana Esplanade at Mana View Road – flooding.

The MetService has also issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the Kāpiti Coast, Upper Hutt City, Hutt City, Porirua City, Wellington City and South Wairarapa. Drivers can expect challenging driving conditions and must take extra care on the roads until the weather eases.

UPDATE 8:50 am:

The crash on State Highway 59 near Paekākāriki has been cleared and the road is now open to traffic.

Bad weather is affecting the wider Wellington highway network, and drivers are warned to be ready for related hazards such as surface flooding, slips, and rockfalls.

Road users are urged to take care on the roads and drive to the conditions, and to check road and weather conditions before they travel.


8:35 am:

Wellington drivers are asked to avoid State Highway 59 at Mana, north of Porirua this morning with the highway closed due to flooding.

Heavy rain has caused extensive surface flooding, and the highway is currently closed at Mana View Road.

This sections of State Highway 59 remains closed until further notice. Drivers must avoid the area and use and alternative route. Drivers heading from Wellington to the Kāpiti Coast should use State Highway 1 Transmission Gully.

Further north, following a crash reported around 8:15 am, State Highway 59 has a southbound closure in place  to southbound traffic between Paekākāriki and Pukerua Bay. Drivers can expect travel delays while this incident is being resolved.

With more bad weather expected, drivers must be ready for wet weather conditions, and weather-related driving hazards across the region today. Road crews are on duty and responding to incidents as they occur.

Because heavy rain can see routes closed at short notice, road users should check road and weather conditions before they travel.
