UPDATE: Crash closes State Highway 1 near Blenheim (SH1 open under stop/go traffic controls)

UPDATE 6:50 pm:

State Highway 1 has reopened near Blenheim following a serious crash earlier this evening.

The highway has one lane open and is under stop/go traffic management at the crash site.

Drivers can expect ongoing delays while traveling through the area. Emergency services remain at the scene.

They should take extra care at the crash site, follow all instructions from emergency services and contractors, and observe all traffic management and temporary speed limits in place.


5:30 pm:

Drivers travelling between Blenheim and Kaikōura are warned to expect significant delays this evening as emergency services attend a serious crash near Blenheim.

The incident, involving two vehicles, was reported shortly before 4:30 pm.

State Highway 1 is closed in both directions at Riverlands, near the intersection of Sheffield Street.

Police have confirmed the Serious Crash Unit is attending, So, the closure is expected to be in place until much later tonight.

No local road detours are available. 

This means there is no access to Kaikōura. Flood damage has also closed State Highway 1 south of Kaikōura.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area and delay their travel until the incident is resolved.
