UPDATE: New roundabout open on State Highway 58

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 4 Sept 2026 3:19pm | Wellington

The new Moonshine Road roundabout on State Highway 58 is now open to traffic.

Since July, the roundabout has been operational for eastbound traffic only (those going towards the Hutt Valley). This week’s changes saw westbound traffic (those going towards State Highway 1) also able to use the new roundabout.

Contractors had the roundabout fully operational to all traffic early Thursday morning (3 September). To ensure safety and to allow road users sufficient time to adapt to the new road layout, a temporary speed limit of 30 km/h will remain in place across the entire site while project works continue.

Drivers are urged to take care at the new roundabout as the new layout may take some getting used to.

Drivers must signal left as they exit a roundabout. This clearly shows your intentions to other road users, so they know it is safe for them to enter the roundabout.

When approaching a roundabout in New Zealand, you must give way to all vehicles already on the roundabout and all vehicles coming from your right.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi appreciates the ongoing construction is affecting the public and road users.

Contractors are working hard to complete remaining works around both roundabouts as quickly as possible

26 August:

The new Moonshine Road roundabout on State Highway 58 is almost ready for traffic to use.

Since July, the roundabout has been operational for eastbound traffic only (those going towards the Hutt Valley). The upcoming changes will see westbound traffic (those going towards State Highway 1) also able to use the new roundabout.

Contractors are expecting to have the roundabout fully operational to all traffic early next month, potentially before the end of next week.

Precise timing for the switchover is to be confirmed and is weather dependent. Further updates will be shared when schedules are confirmed.

21 July

A date and time have been confirmed for the phased opening of the new Moonshine Road roundabout on State Highway 58.

Dependent on construction progress tonight, the roundabout is expected to partially open to traffic from 5 am tomorrow (Wednesday, 22 July).

Drivers are asked to be patient and take extra care at the intersection as the new roundabout is phased in over the next few weeks.

15 July

Regular users of State Highway 58 need to be ready for a change to its layout with the partial opening of the new roundabout at Moonshine Road scheduled next week.

This will be a two-stage opening with the first stage seeing westbound traffic staying on the existing road with eastbound traffic switched over to the new lane.

Precise timing over the switchover is to be confirmed. But the roundabout is expected to open to traffic next week.

Drivers are urged to take care at the roundabout during its staged opening.

Initially, there will be an extra give way point just before traffic joins the west bound lane. This will apply to road users coming from Moonshine Road who want to turn right, and for drivers wanting to use the roundabout to turn back and head west towards Pāuatahanui and Porirua.

This allows space for the contractors to complete work between the old and new west bound lanes before the second switchover in about four weeks that will make the roundabout fully operational.

It marks another milestone for the State Highway 58 Safety Improvements Project, following the opening of the new roundabout at Flightys Road and Murphys Road in May.

The roundabouts make the busy and high-traffic-volume intersections with local roads much safer while keeping the flow of traffic steady.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi appreciates the project works do affect the public and road users. Contractors are working hard to complete remaining works and open the roundabout as smoothly as possible.

Weather or other factors may cause roadworks to be postponed to the next suitable day or rescheduled. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before they travel.
