UPDATE: Resurfacing night works – State Highway 2 Hutt Valley
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 4 Nov 2026 2:43pm | Wellington
The next stage of planned resurfacing works on the State Highway 2 corridor is due to start next week.
From Sunday, 8 November to Thursday, 19 November, contractors will be working at multiple sites between Melling Link in Lower Hutt and Māoribank in Upper Hutt.
People travelling between Wellington and the Wairarapa should be aware there will be multiple roadworks on State Highway 2 and allow extra time for their journeys.
Drivers can expect one week of northbound nighttime road closures between Melling and Silverstream from Sunday, 8 November to Thursday, 12 November, between 9pm and 4:30am.
They also need to be ready for stop/go traffic management in Māoribank from Sunday, 8 November to Thursday, 19 November, between 8 pm and 4:30 am (excluding Fridays and Saturdays).
Drivers need to be ready for stop/go traffic controls and a 30 km/h temporary speed limit in the northbound and southbound lanes. Five-minute delays can be expected while resurfacing work is being completed.
Approximately 3.7 kilometres of State Highway 2 will be resurfaced as part of these works. The result will be a new road surface with improved grip and skid resistance, making it safer for all road users.
All work will be done at night when traffic volumes are lower. This reduces overall disruption and delays for drivers.
It is critical that drivers follow all traffic management in place, as well as instructions from road crews.
Contractors will be working very close to live traffic lanes, and the traffic management helps keep them and drivers safe.
Lower speed limits are about more than just safety. Driving too fast over an unfinished road surface can damage both the road and vehicles.
Resurfacing work also requires good weather conditions to be effective. This means schedules may change if wet weather occurs. Drivers are always encouraged to double-check road conditions before they travel.
