With high seas and strong swells in Wellington Harbour, and waves splashing over the sea wall, the Ngauranga to Petone shared path has been closed this morning.

The route will remain closed to the public until sea conditions improve and it is safe to reopen.

People are asked to respect the closure and not use the route at this time.

Users of the new Ngauranga to Petone shared path should keep a close eye on the weather with the potential for rough seas to affect the route tomorrow and Wednesday.

The MetService has an Orange Level Heavy Swell Warning in place for the Wellington and Wairarapa coasts.

Regular shared path users should exercise caution and consider alternative transport (e.g., use public transport rather than the path over the coming days) as we expect to see larger waves in Wellington harbour which may affect the route.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Operations Centre will monitor conditions and may close Te Ara Tupua at short notice if wave conditions pose a safety risk.

The times of heightened risk will be around high tide – 11:20 am and 11:40 pm tomorrow.

Path users are asked to take care when using the route, and to also stay up to date on its status.

Updates will be provided on the NZTA/Waka Kotahi Wellington Facebook page(external link) as required.
