UPDATE: SH10 Oromāhoe works to continue this weekend
Following this week’s rain, we are reprogramming work on State Highway 10 at Oromāhoe in order to keep the project on track for completion before schools return and ahead of Waitangi weekend.
To maintain the good progress made, crews will continue working over the long weekend from Saturday 24 January to Monday 26 January. The road will be closed during the day from 7am to 7pm, and open at night from 7pm to 7am.
People travelling to Kerikeri and further north for anniversary weekend will need to use the detour via Old Bay Road and Te Ahu Ahu Road. Take extra care with higher traffic volumes. Slow down, keep to the temporary speed limits, and follow the directions of traffic management staff and signs. The detour adds about 5 minutes to your journey.
The detour has been working well each day, and visitors over the long weekend are asked to be patient on the short detour.
We expect to seal the road early next week and reopen State Highway 10 on the evening of Friday 30 January, as planned.
Plan ahead for full closure of State Highway 10 at Oromāhoe
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) contractors will undertake road rebuild works on a section of State Highway 10 (SH10) at Oromāhoe in the new year.
From Tuesday 13 January 7pm to Friday 16 January 7pm, SH10 will be closed between SH1/SH10 Pakaraka intersection and SH10/SH11 Puketona Roundabout.
From Monday 19 January to Friday 30 January, SH10 will be closed during the day only from 7am – 7pm (with 2-4 February as contingency).
The road will be fully open Saturday 24 to Monday 26 January for Northland/Auckland Anniversary.
Northbound traffic will detour via State Highway 1 (SH1), Old Bay Road, and Te Ahu Ahu Road, before rejoining SH10. Southbound traffic will use the same detour, in reverse (map below).
The detour is expected to add about 5 minutes to people’s journeys.

Work will involve removing the old pavement layers and rebuilding the road, to improve the longevity, resilience and ultimately the safety of the road for everyone.
By closing the road, the project will be completed around two weeks earlier than if it was done under stop/go traffic management. This will help avoid congestion when school starts and ahead of Waitangi weekend.
Access will be maintained for residents and businesses within the closure area, and emergency services will be accommodated at all times. Note, there will be increased noise for residents in the area during work hours.
Contractors will undertake sealing and routine maintenance work within the closure area to make the most of the closure and minimise future disruption.
Please treat our crews with kindness and respect. Reduce your speed, adhere to the temporary speed limits and follow the directions of traffic management staff and signs.
We do our best to stick to planned dates for state highway maintenance work, but weather, unforeseen circumstances, or other factors may cause changes. Before heading out, check this website for the latest updates.
